Balancing Books

For the past couple of years, I have been using this free accounting software to keep track of all of our expenses and income.  I only try to balance the books every spring before income tax season.  With our investments and our rental properties, it can be quite difficult to get the books to balance.  Barb hates it when I ask her about things she purchased on Mastercard months before so that I can put the expenses in their specific accounts.  She gets especially upset when I ask her about her wool and fabric purchases.  Fortunately, this year she didn’t do many purchases not because she has enough wool and fabric but because the Canadian dollar is so bad in comparison to the US dollar she loses a lot of money on the exchange.  I always had problems remembering what cheques I write because I forget to write notes in the back of the cheque book.  This year we found out that we could actually see a copy of the cheques on line.  That was a great help because I found that we paid the land transfer fee twice for our property in Morningside.  When we came back and told the park manager and she couldn’t believe it. But Barb showed her a print out and the manager noticed that it did look like her handwriting on the cheques.  So after it was agreed by the headquarters, we got a refund cheque for $350.
