The shortstop on our team has real trouble throwing to first
base. He takes a big windup and throws
the ball sidearm. Between innings, he
came up to me and told me that he thought I was solid at first base. I thanked him for the compliment. Then the next inning, I missed one of his
throws to first base. It was wide to my
glove hand side and I stretched as far as I could and still kept my foot on the
base. The ball went off the end of my
glove and bounced to the fence. The
runner was safe at first but couldn't advance to second because the catcher was
backing me up.
